Rain delay brings 'doubleheader' for D-Backs against Reds

CINCINNATI – Saturday will see the Arizona Diamondbacks have two matchups, as the D-Backs will finish out Friday night’s game after a rain delay and suspension followed by the second game of the series this afternoon.

Friday night saw a massive downpour at the Great American Ballpark, and Mother Nature did not let up. A rain delay was implemented, and the eventual suspension of the game was called. The Diamondbacks and Reds are currently tied 3-3 in the seventh inning, and they will resume play on Saturday at 11:10 a.m. PT.

It was Eduardo Rodriguez’s first game back after right shoulder inflammation landed him on the 15-day IL. E-Rod pitched five innings and only gave up two earned runs on six hits. Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo had a pair of back-to-back home runs in the third inning that got the D-Backs on the board.

Saturday afternoon pitching matchups:

In the second game of the series this afternoon, the D-Backs are relying on Ryne Nelson. With the injuries mounting up for Arizona, Nelson will get another opportunity and hopefully seize it again. Nelson has been stellar for Arizona with a 2-1 record and a 3.43 ERA. In his last two appearances, Nelson has yet to allow any earned runs in 10.2 innings pitched.

The Reds will have Nick Martinez on the mound after the morning game wraps up. Martinez has a 3-6 record with a 3.89 ERA. He got knocked around his last time out, as Martinez only made it through 4.2 innings and gave up five earned runs on seven hits in a 7-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs last Sunday.

Soon after Arizona and Cincinnati wrap up their first game of the series, the D-Backs will be right back at it with the second installment of the series on Saturday coming at 1:10 p.m. PT.
