All signs initially pointed to the Texas Rangers activating veteran pitcher and potential trade chip Chris Martin off the injured list on Wednesday.
Instead, Texas held off, and Martin instead threw a bullpen session. The Rangers placed their 39-year-old reliever on the injured list over two weeks ago with right shoulder fatigue.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy told reporters that they’re in a “holding pattern” with Martin, who posted a 1.83 ERA and 23-3 K-BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings before the injury.
“We don’t want to activate him until we feel that he’s ready, and he feels that he’s ready,” Bochy said, according to the Dallas Morning News.
“So we’re going to take another bullpen and continue to reevaluate where he is at,” Bochy added.
Martin, who is in his second stint with the Rangers, served as the club’s eighth-inning man. He rejoined Texas, where he previously pitched from 2018-19, on a one-year, $5.5 million contract in January.
A 2005 21st-round pick of the Colorado Rockies, Martin owns a 3.29 ERA in 366 1/3 career innings. He’s pitched for seven clubs, winning a World Series ring with the 2021 Atlanta Braves.
Martin is only two years removed from a 12th-place AL Cy Young finish after he recorded a 1.05 ERA in 51 1/3 innings for the Red Sox.
