Rangers Get Joc Pederson Update After Hit by Pitch

The Texas Rangers have an update on Joc Pederson after the designated hitter was hit by a pitch during Saturday’s win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Pederson was hit on his left hand by a 93.3 mph fastball from Diamondbacks starter Brandon Pfaadt in the fifth inning. He initially stayed in the game and ran the bases but was later replaced by pinch-hitter Justin Foscue.

The good news for the Rangers is that initial X-rays came back negative for a fracture. However, manager Skip Schumaker said Pederson will undergo further testing with a hand specialist as the team looks to get a better understanding of the injury.

The Rangers have reason to be careful with Pederson after he missed significant time last season because of a right hand fracture suffered after being hit by a pitch. The latest injury is to his left hand, but the previous issue makes additional testing important.

Pederson has been a key part of Texas’ offense this season. He is batting .235 with 26 home runs, 53 RBIs and an .816 OPS through 136 games, with his 26 homers tied with Jake Burger for the team lead.

Pederson has primarily served as the Rangers’ designated hitter in a platoon role with Foscue. That could be important for Sunday’s series finale, as Texas is scheduled to face left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez.

The Rangers defeated Arizona 6-2 on Saturday to even the series. Wyatt Langford hit a solo home run and Ezequiel Duran added a two-run single during a six-run fifth inning.

Texas enters Sunday’s game at 73-76 and two games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West. The Rangers are also two games back of the final American League Wild Card spot, making Pederson’s status worth watching as the regular season enters its final stretch.
