Rays Announce Disappointing Yandy Diaz News After Diamondbacks Game

Tampa Bay Raysdesignated hitter Yandy Diaz is having an excellent eighth season with the organization. The longest-tenured Ray has continued to hit at an elite level.

Through 77 games, Diaz leads the entire American League with 98 hits. He also owns the highest batting average in the AL at .334, along with a .417 on-base percentage, .933 OPS, 12 home runs and 52 RBIs.

Diaz has been unstoppable, and unfortunately he did not advance to Phase 2 of All-Star Game voting. However, there is still a strong chance he makes the team as a reserve given his numbers, and if he does it would mark his second All-Star selection during his time with the Rays.

Aside from individual accolades, Diaz is looking to help the Rays return to the MLB playoffs.

However, he has to stay healthy to do so, and unfortunately he suffered an injury during Sunday's win against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Diaz was removed in the bottom of the seventh inning with Richie Palacios entering in his place.

After the game, the Rays announced the reason for his early exit. "#Rays Yandy Diaz was removed from today's game with a left shoulder strain. He's day-to-day, the team says," reported sideline reporter Ryan Bass.

It is unclear when Diaz suffered the strain, but given that he does not play the field, he likely felt the setback during a prior at-bat. While he is day-to-day and it does not initially appear serious enough to warrant an injured list stint, it is still disappointing to see one of the faces of the franchise go down.

Alongside third baseman Junior Caminero, Diaz has been the engine of this offense, and Tampa Bay needs him healthy as the Rays look to retain sole possession of first place in a tight AL East race.
