Rays Issue Shane McClanahan Update for MLB Playoffs

The Tampa Bay Rays will be without Shane McClanahan when they begin their 2026 postseason run, but the left-hander could still return later in October.

Manager Kevin Cash said Wednesday that McClanahan will not be included on Tampa Bay’s American League Division Series roster because of left forearm tightness. The Rays placed him on the injured list earlier this month after he experienced the issue during a Sept. 3 start.

McClanahan has not been ruled out for the American League Championship Series if the Rays advance. Cash said the decision will depend on how the pitcher progresses through his throwing program.

The setback comes after McClanahan put together a strong 2026 season in his return to the Rays’ rotation. The two-time All-Star made 24 starts and finished with a 10-7 record, 3.36 ERA and 106 strikeouts over 118 innings.

The Rays had already secured a first-round bye after clinching the AL East, giving McClanahan additional time to continue his recovery before Tampa Bay begins its ALDS.

For now, Tampa Bay will have to move forward without one of its key starters. The Rays’ rotation will need to cover the opening postseason series while McClanahan continues building back toward game readiness.

McClanahan’s potential availability beyond the ALDS gives the Rays another decision to make if they advance. His throwing progression over the next several days will determine whether a return becomes realistic for a later round.
