Rays sign ex-Dodgers pitcher, but there’s a catch

The Tampa Bay Rays signed former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Michael Grove on Tuesday, the team announced. It is an MLB contract for Grove. However, Grove, who is recovering from right shoulder surgery, was placed on the 15-day injured list. In a corresponding move, Ryan Pepiot, who is also a former Dodgers pitcher now with the Rays, was transferred to the 60-day IL as he deals with right hip inflammation.

Grove displayed signs of promise early in his career with the Dodgers. He was given an MLB opportunity in 2022, but the right-hander turned in a 4.60 ERA across seven outings. Still, hopes were high for Grove.

Things got worse in 2023, as Grove made 18 total MLB appearances (12 starts) and pitched to a 6.13 ERA. Grove last appeared at the MLB level in 2024, where he primarily pitched out of the bullpen (39 total outings) and recorded a 5.12 ERA. He ended up undergoing shoulder surgery before the 2025 season.

After missing all of 2025, Grove elected free agency after being removed from the Dodgers’ 40-man roster. Now, he is set to receive an opportunity with the Rays. It remains to be seen when he will pitch this year.

Grove is only 29 years old. The Rays have done a respectable job of developing pitchers in the past. Perhaps they can help Grove find success once he returns from injury. It’s a low-risk signing that could prove to be crucial if Grove ends up making an impact.

The Rays’ next game is scheduled for Tuesday night against the Chicago White Sox, with first pitch at 7:40 PM EST.
