The Boston Red Sox are off to a rough start in the 2026 MLB season. They won only twice in their first 10 games of the season, and while they have improved in the past three weeks, they still have a lot to work on.
Boston is currently 8-12 on the season, putting them fourth in the AL East. The concern for the Red Sox intensified on Wednesday when their ace, Garrett Crochet, had a disastrous showing against the Minnesota Twins.
In just 1.2 innings, Crochet allowed 11 runs (10 earned), as the Red Sox fell to the Twins 13-6.
Sure enough, Crochet and the Red Sox remain optimistic that they can turn things around as the season progresses.
While Crochet and the Red Sox are focused on moving up the standings, they haven't forgotten their commitment to making an impact beyond the game of baseball.
On Friday, prior to their showdown with the Detroit Tigers, the Red Sox announced the program captains for their foundation. Crochet was chosen to be a player captain, specifically for their Fenway Park Learning Lab initiative.
The Fenway Park Learning Lab is an "immersive" and "educational tour" for sixth-grade students from Boston Public Schools. The tour includes activities that teach students about statistics, history, science and financial literacy, among others.
As a player captain, Crochet is expected to "participate in community visits and pregame meet-and-greets throughout the year with program participants."
Aside from the Red Sox ace, other players chosen as captains for the Red Sox Foundation programs include Garrett Whitlock, Tanner Houck, Patrick Sandoval and Carlos Narvaez.
Whitlock has been named as the Jimmy Fund Captain, while Houck will serve as the Home Base Captain. Sandoval has been tasked with representing the team in the Red Sox Scholars program, while Narvaez has been chosen for the Nike RBI Captain initiative.
