The Boston Red Sox provided an update on right-hander Kutter Crawford on Wednesday, with manager Alex Cora addressing the situation following recent speculation about his absence.

Speaking to Tim Healy of the Boston Globe, Cora revealed that Crawford is dealing with a right wrist issue that will require surgery. Crawford, already on the 60-day injured list, is expected to remain sidelined for the rest of the season.

Cora emphasized that Crawford's injury wasn't the result of anything reckless. "It hasn't been a great year for him," Cora said. "... It's just an accident." The team declined to specify the nature of the incident, only noting that it occurred off the field.

"It sucks because we were talking about how deep we were in spring training and the options that we had in the starting rotation," Cora said ahead of Wednesday's series finale against the Los Angeles Angels. "And now it's getting thinner and thinner."

The 29-year-old has yet to pitch this season after sustaining a right knee injury during his third start in 2024.

Despite the injury, Crawford emerged as one of the Red Sox's most durable arms. He led the club in both innings (188 2/3) and strikeouts (175), while tying for the most starts in the American League with 33.

However, he also surrendered a league-high 34 home runs and finished the year with a 9-16 record and a 4.36 ERA.

Boston's injury woes continue to mount. The Red Sox are currently without Hunter Dobbins, Justin Slaten, Tanner Houck, Liam Hendriks, Chris Murphy and Patrick Sandoval, all of whom are on the IL. Jordan Hicks, acquired in the Rafael Devers trade, is also sidelined but could return later this week
