Rookie Roman Anthony has shown his tantalizing potential during his Boston Red Sox debut. However, as the Red Sox battle for playoff positioning, they'll have to do so without their rookie sensation.

Anthony was forced to leave Tuesday's game with oblique tightness. He is undergoing an MRI on Wednesday and the Red Sox are awaiting results to see how serious the injury is.

Still, Boston is planning for the worst and is expected to place Anthony on the injured list, via Chris Cotillo of MassLive. In turn, they're expected to call up utility man Nick Sogard.

"There is a “high probability” Boston will put Anthony on the 10-day IL and recall utility man Nick Sogard from the WooSox before Wednesday’s game against Cleveland, sources told MassLive," Cotillo wrote. "The team is awaiting the results of Anthony’s MRI as of early Wednesday afternoon."

Red Sox Hoping For Quick Roman Anthony Return

Anthony missed some time in August with back tightness. However, this time around, the outfielder's injury has taken on a much scarier face.

“I don’t know,” Anthony said. “I wish I knew. I haven’t dealt with something like this before. So I’d be lying if I said I knew. But again, we’ll know in the morning, I’m sure.”

Once the MRI results are in, the Red Sox can make a better assessment of how long Anthony will be out. He'll at least miss 10 days, but a serious oblique injury could cost him much more time. Still, Anthony has proven to be a building block of the organization, hitting .292 with eight home runs and 32 RBI over his first 71 MLB games. The Red Sox aren't going to rush him back if he isn't healthy.

At the same time, Boston knows how crucial the outfielder is for their playoff push. The Red Sox hold the second AL Wild Card spot with their 78-62 record. Having Anthony in their lineup gets the team closer to their postseason goals. But for now, they're just hoping the rookie can get past his latest worrying injury .
