Red Sox Get Bad News About Potential Rotation Addition

The Boston Red Sox, sitting fourth in the AL East with a 34-36 record, are looking at using the trade market to bolster their roster and make a second-half surge into a playoff spot. Reinforcements may arrive at several positions, including the team's starting rotation, which has struggled early in the 2025 season.

Aaron Civale emerged as a potential candidate to remedy those woes after he requested a trade from the  Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday. Just one day later, it appears that Civale will be moving to another organization.

Civale, who MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported “would absolutely love to pitch for the Red Sox at some point in his career,” was dealt to the Chicago White Sox Friday morning, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy . The Brewers received first baseman Andrew Vaughn from the White Sox in return.

Civale has pitched to a 1-2 record, 4.91 ERA, and 1.36 WHIP across five starts with the Brewers this season. In those starts, he has pitched 22 innings, where he has allowed 23 hits and 12 runs while striking out 19 batters and walking seven.

Before joining the Brewers via a trade last season, Civale spent time with the Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays. He possesses a 40-37 record, 4.06 ERA, and 1.21 WHIP across his 122 career appearances. In 658.1 career innings pitched, he has totaled 596 punchouts and 177 free passes while limiting opposing hitters to a .247 batting average.

With Civale's move set to become official, the Red Sox will be forced to look elsewhere to add pieces to their pitching staff, among other spots on their 26-man roster.
