Red Sox Legend Pedro Martinez Calls Out David Ortiz Over Rafael Devers Comments

"Big Papi also made a mistake in spring training by speaking in front of the cameras about some of the things he needed to tell Devers," Martinez said. "That should've been handled in-house. ... That was the first mistake by Big Papi."

Martinez is calling out Ortiz for speaking publicly on the Devers matter. Being open and sharing his thoughts in front of the cameras, as Ortiz did, didn't help the ongoing drama surrounding Devers and the organization. He didn't just criticize Ortiz, though; he also shared how he should've gone about things.

"The other thing is," Martinez continued. "I don't like to hear those comments after things happened like that. I would've loved for Big Papi to come over, grab Devers, got to a restaurant, go to his house, throw a bar-b-que, and talk to Devers in his house."

Taking the time to talk privately, from one legend of the team to a current one, might've helped the two sides reconcile. But with Ortiz making his comments public, Devers was effectively thrown under the bus.

Martinez, who, unlike Ortiz, isn't a member of the Red Sox, was frustrated with how Ortiz handled things. While Ortiz managing the situation differently might not have led to a change in the problem, it at least wouldn't have put Devers in such a difficult spot.

Pining Devers against Ortiz is a bad look, and with how the situation unfolded, based on Ortiz's public comments, that's the way things looked. Their inability to communicate was an overarching issue in the Devers drama.

As a fellow Red Sox legend, Martinez wasn't afraid to call out Ortiz for how he handled things. He criticized Ortiz for how he handled the situation and wished he had approached it behind closed doors.
