Red Sox Linked to Cubs' All-Star as Rafael Devers Replacement

Following the trade of Rafael Devers, the Boston Red Sox lineup has a massive crater in the middle of it. While top prospects Roman Anthony and Marcello Mayer can help fill the void, there is not a single player on the roster who can currently fill Devers’ shoes.

Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow could take an aggressive approach at the deadline and move pieces to strengthen the roster, but the odds a bat of Devers’ caliber is available are slim.

The thin trade market may force the Red Sox to push off any plans to add a middle-of-the-order slugger till the offseason. NBC Sports Boston's Nick Goss recently listed several players the Red Sox could target in free agency. Among them is Chicago Cubs outfielder and impending free agent Kyle Tucker

Although adding another lefty bat to the lineup may not be a preference, there is no doubt that Tucker provides an MVP-level impact.

Tucker, 28, is likely on his way to his fourth All-Star Game this season. In 71 games, he is slashing .277/.389/.504 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs. Unlike Devers, who rarely produced on the basepaths, Tucker also has 18 stolen bases.

Signing Tucker would also create a further logjam in an already crowded outfield. Would Boston be willing to part ways with Jarren Duran or Wilyer Abreu to make space for Anthony and the possible addition of Tucker?

Trading either player for a package that includes a starting pitcher upgrade would be wise after struggling through the inconsistencies of Walker Buehler and Lucas Giolito.

As the trade deadline approaches, the decision to buy or sell could be a clear indicator of Boston’s plans. If they are serious about contending and strengthening the roster around their young core, Tucker presents an enticing skill set that fits the Red Sox’s need for a top star.
