The Boston Red Sox's long-awaited return of third baseman Alex Bregman is finally here. The star third baseman signed a three-year, $120 million contract this offseason and had exceeded all expectations early on.
Bregman suffered a right quad strain on May 23, running out a single, and has missed the last 43 games. However, Friday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, Bregman will make his return to the field.

He'll do so as the Red Sox are red-hot. Boston has taken advantage of weaker opponents in their last two series and won seven straight games, and 10 of their last 12. They have three more games against the Tampa Bay Rays before the All-Star break, who currently sit a half-game above them in the AL East.
The Red Sox recent hot-streak has put them five games over .500, and closed the deficit in their division to just five games. Boston has also put themselves into the third wild card spot at the moment.
Now, the Red Sox will get their most productive player back in the lineup. Bregman, despite missing 43 games, will not need a rehab assignment, and will play his first action back from injury with the Red Sox.
"Physically, he has done everything here. We trust the at-bat, we trust him. We're gonna roll with it," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday (h/t CBS News). "You gain, I don't know, five, six or seven at-bats, so why not get them here?"
Cora said the plan is for Bregman to play two games this weekend to ease him back in before he gets a longer break for the All-Star festivities. Bregman will likely play Friday and Sunday, with the day off on Saturday.
The Red Sox optioned infielder David Hamilton to Triple-A as the corresponding move with the activation of Bregman. Hamilton struggled at the plate during his time at the major league level, but provided strong defense.
