Red Sox Make Announcement on Veteran Catcher

Wong has not done much at the plate in his limited 23 at-bats in 2025, with a .087 batting average, a .279 OPS, and a -17 OPS+. However, he should return to the Red Sox with newfound confidence after tearing up Triple-A pitching for Worcester. The soon-to-be 29-year-old hit .364 with a 1.156 OPS and one home run over three rehab games.

Perhaps the most encouraging sign at the plate from that assignment was a two-to-two walk-to-strikeout ratio, something that has plagued Wong since his big league debut.

Even in 2024, when Wong recorded career highs in every major statistical category (13 home runs, .280 batting average, .758 OPS, 110 OPS+, 126 games), he had an abysmal 28 walks to 114 strikeouts.

Wong is not nearly the defensive catcher of his counterpart, Carlos Narváez, and will need to produce at the plate to earn consistent playing time.

Boston does boast a talented lineup, and perhaps it is better off with the defense-first approach of Narváez, but Wong could still make for a valuable weapon at the bottom of this order.

Meanwhile, fill-in backup catcher Blake Sabol will head back to the minors and appears unlikely to receive MLB playing time unless either Wong or Narváez head to the IL.

He is batting .125 with a .354 OPS and 0 OPS+ through 16 at-bats, and does not have a strong enough reputation behind the plate to stay with the Red Sox.
