The Boston Red Sox are loaded with young middle infield talent right now, and while Kristian Campbell is the one grabbing headlines during a red-hot start to the 2025 season, more high-ceiling talent is on the way down on the farm.
Marcelo Mayer is also a consensus Top 100 prospect who could be in the majors later this year, thanks to a strong start at Triple-A that included an .844 OPS with seven home runs and 34 RBI in 25 games at Triple-A Worcester.
With that tandem representing the potential double-play combination of the future and veteran shortstop Trevor Story also still under contract through 2027, the Red Sox could opt to trade from an area of depth this summer when they are likely to pursue pitching help if they are still in the playoff hunt.
Teenager Franklin Arias joined Campbell and Mayer on the Baseball America Top 100 prospect list to start the year, checking in at No. 72 leaguewide, and he hit .346/.407/.397 in 86 plate appearances over 19 games at Single-A to earn a quick promotion to High-A in late April.
Arias has already exceeded expectations since signing for a modest $525,000 as part of the team's 2023 international class, which was actually headlined by another shortstop prospect in Yoeilin Cespedes who signed for nearly three times that figure.
With Brayan Bello back healthy has become less of a pressing need, but don't be surprised if the Red Sox are kicking the tires on starters leading up to the trade deadline, and Arias could be viewed as an expendable piece in a system stacked with middle infielders.
