With all of the injuries the Boston Red Sox have dealt with, most recently to Triston Casas, the team eventually has to decide on some of their top prospects.
The Red Sox having Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer in Triple-A at some point doesn’t make much sense. There are two of the top prospects in Major League Baseball, if not the best two, when they’re playing at the top of their ability.
However, the Red Sox have insisted that the time isn’t now.
When speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Red Sox president Sam Kennedy said the time will come when it’s right. He added that he hates to say this, and he hopes nobody gets injured, but it could be one injury away before one of them makes their debut.
“Excited to get them up here when the time is right,” Kennedy told NESN’s Tom Caron on Wednesday. “You hate to say this, knock on wood, cross your toes. You’re just one injury away from big moves being made. Things happen sooner rather than later. Sometimes when guys go down with injury and when guys are playing at the level that they’re playing at, you’d expect to see them relatively soon.”
Offensively speaking, the Red Sox haven’t been bad for much of the year. They could be better, but the offense has shown some signs.
However, adding a bat of Anthony’s or Mayer’s caliber would be significant.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Red Sox want them to make their debut in a similar time frame, but regardless, one of them needs to be at Fenway sooner rather than later.
