In a win-or-go-home game for the Boston Red Sox Wednesday night, they will be without Roman Anthony.
Speaking with reporters before Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series against the New York Yankees, Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said Anthony underwent an MRI that revealed damage to muscles in his right wrist, different from the finger injury he previously suffered. He will miss the rest of the series and potentially the ALDS if the Red Sox advance. Tracy also added that Jahmai Jones will take Anthony’s spot at the top of the lineup.

This devastating update for Anthony comes after the young outfielder exited after his second at-bat during Boston’s 9-0 loss to the Yankees in Game 1.
Anthony has had a lost season, missing much of the regular season because of a partially torn ligament in his right ring finger. In just 55 games, the 22-year-old slashed .245/.339/.396 with five home runs and 15 RBI.
Anthony’s injury-riddled sophomore campaign follows an impressive rookie season. In 71 games last year, he batted .292/.396/.463 with eight homers, 32 RBI, 18 doubles and an OPS of .859.
The Red Sox now face the reality of being without Anthony for the rest of the series and potentially the ALDS if they rally for two straight wins.
As for who will take Anthony’s spot on the Wild Card Series roster, Jorge Castillo of ESPN reported that it will be infielder Curtis Mead.
After getting blanked in Game 1, the Red Sox need to win tonight to save their season. Their Game 2 starter will be Sonny Gray, while the Yankees will throw out lefty hurler Max Fried. Game 2 of the series gets underway Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium.
