There's a bunch going on with right-hander Hunter Dobbins, who made some ridiculous comments stating that he would never want to play for the New York Yankees and would rather retire.
He also mentioned that the Yankees drafted his father before he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks. According to a report from the New York Post, that wasn't true, adding fuel to this entire situation.
Regardless of what happened in the past, Dobbins' comments didn't make much sense.
The Boston Red Sox have to understand that while this is a rivalry, there's no reason an unproven rookie should be talking like that. If anything, this only adds fuel to the Yankees' fire to beat Boston when it matters most.
And for now, the Red Sox haven't been good enough to talk about the Yankees.
But Dobbins has doubled down and even tripled down when speaking to reporters on Wednesday.
He said that the Yankees and Red Sox have a great rivalry between two cities with a long history together. He added that anything that goes into the news will just be a story, and he's ready to get the ball on Saturday when the Red Sox play the Yankees at Fenway Park.
“Doesn’t faze me,” he said, per the NY Post. “Doesn’t bother me. I love working with the media and everybody here. Everybody’s been great. My focus is performing for the guys here in the locker room, for the fans in Boston. Something that’s a few hours away doesn’t faze me.”
“This is a great rivalry, two cities that have a long history together,” Dobbins said. “Anything that’s in the news that goes with both of them is gonna turn into a story. It just adds to the game, we just have to embrace it and keep rolling."
