Red Sox Star Rafael Devers Remains Firm About Third Base

Amid all of the excitement that came with the announcement of Alex Bregman to the Boston Red Sox, there appears to be some drama building at Fenway South with Red Sox All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers.

In a press conference on Monday, Devers was asked if he would be willing to move off third to accommodate Bregman, to which Devers answered simply with "no."

Later in the day, in response to Devers' comments, manager Alex Cora was asked if there was a strain between the Red Sox and Devers due to them "going back on their word" when it came to naming Devers' as the team's long-term third baseman. Cora, seemingly a bit edged by the question, dismissed the claim, saying that that comment was made by the team's former CBO Chaim Bloom, now in St. Louis.

While Cora is undoubtedly correct in his assertion that Bloom is no longer with the team, it is disingenuous to say that these comments were entirely linked to Bloom. Just this winter, on WEEI's Jones and Keefe, current CBO Craig Breslow insisted that Devers was the man for third and that the team was "really excited about that."

These feelings have changed, and in Devers's case, his qualms about moving off third are warranted. Breslow and the Red Sox need to address this issue themselves, as the front office clearly stated throughout the offseason that Devers was staying at third.

Hopefully, the Red Sox can iron out this issue quickly, as apart from this blimp, the vibes are at an all-time high heading into 2025.
