Mike Trout is a player who, even if he retired today and did not hit a baseball again, would already be heading to the Baseball Hall of Fame. His list of accolades is a lengthy one: three-time Most Valuable Player, three-time All-MLB First Team, 11-time All-Star, nine-time Silver Slugger and the 2012 American League Rookie of the Year.
There is one thing glaringly omitted from that list – a World Series ring (or, frankly, any kind of postseason success). Since Trout's MLB debut in 2011, the Los Angeles Angels have made the playoffs only once. A 98-win regular season was not enough for the Angels, who were swept in a best-of-five ALDS series against the Kansas City Royals in 2014.
Trout's window for winning a World Series is closing, and it is becoming more clear that he will not win one in Los Angeles. That's why, according to Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer, there is intrigue surrounding a potential trade deadline move, despite Trout being in the sixth year of a 12-year, $426.5 million contact he signed in 2019.
Rymer proposes that, should Trout be looking for a move, the Boston Red Sox could be a potential destination, especially since the club has championship aspirations.
"The Red Sox trading away Rafael Devers only to turn around and trade for Trout wouldn't necessarily be an upgrade. But if absolutely nothing else, it would be amazing content," Rymer wrote. "And as ideas go, it's not a hard sell. The Red Sox saved about $200 million by trading Devers, which is roughly what Trout is still owed. They badly need right-handed thump, and Trout could provide it by slotting into Devers' old haunt at DH, with only occasional duty in Boston's youth-infused outfield.
"Of course, Trout would have to have faith that the Red Sox can actually contend after mostly not doing so since 2018. But if his choice is between the Red Sox and the Angels, the former is by far the better bet to make sure he doesn't remain stuck on three career playoff games."
It is worth noting that such a deal would be highly unlikely, as Trout has never expressed interest in being traded or placed the Angels' front office in an uncomfortable position to make a move. But it will be interesting to see how the Red Sox continue to navigate the market – and whether Trout's name is brought up in trade talks.
