Make it one more banged up infielder for the Boston Red Sox.
Caleb Durbin, who has emerged as one of Boston's best hitters in the month of June, was forced out of Wednesday's rubber match against the Colorado Rockies after a taking hard head-first dive into first base in the third inning. After making the final out he did not come back out to play defense in the bottom half, with Anthony Seigler sliding over from second to third.
The Red Sox later revealed that he suffered a subluxation (partial dislocation) of his left pinky during the slide.

Marcelo Mayer, who was not in the lineup for back-to-back games with a sore foot, came on to play shortstop after Durbin's exit. Durbin now joins Nick Sogard (oblique), Isiah Kiner-Falefa (forearm), and Trevor Story (hernia surgery) as Red Sox infielders dealing with injuries. What was once an area of depth has now been tested, with Seigler and Andruw Monasterio seeing additional playing time after Kiner-Falefa went down.
It's unclear how significant Durbin's injury could be, and an MRI may be needed to rule out any additional ligament damage. The young infielder did stick around in the dugout Wednesday with just tape on his finger. The hope is that all it took was a quick resetting, in which case Durbin will likely just have to battle through some soreness in his glove hand to get back on the field.
Regardless, it comes at an inopportune time for Boston's third baseman, who has seemingly turned a corner after a terrible start with the club, batting .458 with a 1.313 OPS in his last seven games. Durbin batted exactly .200 in April and May but is slashing .317/.343/.587 in June with four home runs.
While losing Durbin for an extended period would be a significant blow, the Red Sox are expected to get back second baseman Romy Gonzalez sometime during their upcoming homestand where they play host to the New York Yankees. Gonzalez (shoulder) was likely to factor in as a DH to start but could presumably provide some relief in the infield if needed.
