Reds Lefty Masters Hitter Heaven Coors Field
USA TODAY Sports

Coors Field has long been considered the most hitter-friendly ballpark in baseball.

The air is thin, so baseballs fly out of the park. The park is so spacious that balls fall in for hits because the outfielders have to play so deep.

Also, the thin air messes with the pitcher’s breaking balls due to the dry air.

Nick Lodolo mastered the conditions on Sunday. He allowed two infield hits, and even then, one was questionable, and pitched seven scoreless innings. He walked one batter and hit another with his patented back-foot curveball. He is now 3-2 on the year with a 2.25 ERA.

The questionable hit was a ground ball hit by Jordan Beck. Elly De La Cruz fielded the ball, but his throw drew first baseman Spencer Steer off the base. Replays show that a good throw would have been an out call. The Reds had the play reviewed, claiming Steer was on when he caught the ball. Ultimately, the call stood.

The other was a slow roller right on the third base line. Noelvi Marte let it roll, but it hit the bag.

It was his first-ever Major League start in the Rocky Mountain air.

Lodolo shut out negative thoughts.

“I had thrown there in the Future’s Game, so I had one inning there before,” Lodolo said. “I haven’t checked the video to see if it changed the movement on my pitches. I just tried not to really worry about it and just attack guys. It worked. There was nothing crazy though. I had good stuff too.”

Lodolo enjoyed the offensive support that had been lacking before the return of Austin Hays, who had two home runs in the two hits and two RBI in the 8-1 win.

“When we hit the ball, I can tell you. It was going,” Lodolo said. “It’s a really cool spot. I like the field, everything. It’s pretty sweet. It’s different from any other ballpark that we play in.”

When you pitch like he did Sunday, every place is a good place to play.
