Reds make Jose Trevino IL move amid hamstring injury

Ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Cleveland Guardians, the Cincinnati Reds announced five roster moves, including placing catcher Jose Trevino on the 10-day injured list following a left hamstring injury suffered in Saturday’s game. Cincinnati replaced him by selecting the contract of catcher PJ Higgins from Triple-A Louisville.

The move marks Trevino’s second trip to the injured list this season. He previously missed around three weeks in April with a thoracic spine sprain. Injuries and poor offensive production have limited his impact, as the veteran catcher owns a .143/.172/.179 slash line with one extra-base hit across 30 plate appearances and 10 games this year. Cincinnati’s catching group, which has also included Higgins and starter Robert Stephenson, has combined for a -0.1 bWAR this season.

Higgins already spent time with the Reds earlier this year when Trevino first landed on the IL in April. During that stint, Higgins appeared in five games and recorded a .450 OPS over 12 plate appearances. After Trevino returned, Cincinnati designated Higgins for assignment before outrighting him to Louisville, where he chose to remain in the organization instead of electing free agency. Just over a week after being DFA’d again, Higgins is back on the major league roster.

The Reds also recalled right-handed pitcher Jose Franco from Triple-A and optioned right-hander Luis Mey to Louisville in an effort to add a fresh bullpen arm. Mey encountered command problems during his major league call-up, walking more than 7.5 batters per nine innings. Cincinnati’s bullpen has issued more walks than any team in MLB this season.

To create room on the 40-man roster, the Reds designated outfielder Rece Hinds for assignment. Hinds flashed power after debuting in 2024, hitting .261/.333/.717 with five home runs in 51 plate appearances, but he slumped to a .118/.150/.250 line with 39 strikeouts over 80 plate appearances during the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
