Reds Provide Injury Update on Eugenio Suárez

It was a rough series finale for the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday as the team lost two of their stars to injury ahead of a crucial four-game set against the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers.

Both Eugenio Suárez (wrist) and Elly De La Cruz (ankle) suffered injuries during the Reds' 9-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday. The good news for Cincinnati is that initial reports suggest both players will be fine and will not miss significant time. De La Cruz stayed in the game against the Pirates and is set to bat leadoff in Monday's series opener against the Brewers.

Suarez, who was hit in the wrist by a pitch from Mitch Keller, will not be in the lineup on Monday, but his tests earlier in the day came back negative. The 34-year-old initially stayed in the game on Sunday, but was removed in the eighth inning when Nathaniel Lowe came in as a pinch-hitter. Suarez went for X-rays on Sunday evening, but his wrist was too swollen to provide anything conclusive.

Although Suarez will sit out on Monday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer's Gordon Wittenmyer, the slugger was seen in the clubhouse with a hard protector on his hand. Suarez was still able to fist bump teammates with the injured hand, suggesting that Suarez should be back in the lineup sooner rather than later. When asked about his hand, Suarez replied that he was "ready to go."

For now, it appears the Reds avoided the worst-case scenario on Sunday. Any significant injury stint for either star could have been the nail in the coffin for Cincinnati this year. The team sits in last-place in the NL Central division, and is 11.5 games back of the Brewers, and 4.5 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot.

In 55 MLB games this year, Suarez is slashing .208/.276/.376, with eight home runs and 29 RBI. Suarez's next chance to suit up for the Reds will be on Tuesday evening in Milwaukee.
