Everything was working for the New York Yankees last night. Four players had multiple hits, three sent long home runs into the night, and the Will Warren/Tim Hill combo put up seven shutout innings.
Then came reliever Geoff Hartlieb. One third of an inning later, Mariners fans are starting to feel like they can win a game they were down 10-0 in.
Three runs, three hits and one walk was the line for Hartlieb, getting just one out in his appearance. His ERA is now sitting, for the season, at a cool 40.50.
Maybe having the league’s home run leader take you deep isn’t the worst thing, but when you cook him up a meaty, belt-high, hanging slider right over the plate, you can’t expect a high-five.
That was enough for the Yankees. They announced this morning they have DFA’d Hartlieb for the second time in a week.
The open roster spot went to Cam Schlittler, a starting pitcher who will be making his MLB debut today.
Last time in this situation, Hartlieb opted for free agency and found his way back on the mound for the Yankees, so there is some chance we see him again. He has been on several major league teams since 2019 and has been able to find some success this season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
If he is going to make it back, though, he has to stay out of sight for a few weeks. The stench of that last outing isn’t going anywhere for a while.
