As you know, the Blue Jays acquired $2 million in international free agent bonus pool money as they took on Myles Straw’s contract. At the time, this was seen as an attempt to sign Rōki Sasaki, who landed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Jays seem to be finally using that extra bonus pool money, as they are expected to sign the 18-year-old right-handed pitcher. Seo-jun stands at 6’5”, and averages 90-93 mph on the fastball, touching as high as 95 mph. There’s still projection remaining in his frame, and his best pitch is a slider. Seo-jun also throws a curveball and a changeup.
In the article, Romero noted that the Blue Jays had a little over $2.1 million remaining of their bonus pool money, meaning they’ll have about $600,000 remaining if they are to sign Seo-jun. The money doesn’t carry over from season to season, meaning the Jays need to use the remaining pool money or lose it forever. Who knows which players they’re looking at.
Although they didn’t land the most highly touted prospect in this year’s international free agency, the Blue Jays have found immediate success. Signing for just under $1 million, shortstop Juan Sanchez has quickly become one of the Blue Jays’ best players, as he’s slashing .342/.446/.560 with seven home runs in 231 plate appearances with one of the Blue Jays’ Dominican Summer League teams.
It’ll be interesting to see where Seo-jun ends up once officially joining the Blue Jays’ system. The Florida Complex League ended a while ago, with the FCL Blue Jays winning the championship. There’s only a handful of DSL games remaining this season as well, which means that the Korean righty will likely make his debut at some point in 2026.
Expect the Jays to sign a few more players in the international free agency over the next few months as well.
