The Los Angeles Dodgers will promote their top infield prospect, Alex Freeland, from Triple-A Oklahoma City, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. A corresponding roster move is yet to be announced. However, infielder Hyeseong Kim has been dealing with a shoulder injury in recent weeks, and his offensive production has declined precipitously. It would not be surprising if Kim lands on the injured list.

Report: Dodgers to Promote Alex Freeland from Triple-A

Better Than Advertised

Despite making a bid for the Opening Day roster, the Dodgers sent Kim to the minor leagues to work on his swing. This decision paid dividends, as the young infielder was hitting above .400 in limited playing time at the big league level. His defense has been impressive as well. However, Kim has been struggling offensively in recent weeks, and it appears the shoulder issue may have something to do with it. The popular infielder’s swing path has been limited.

The Young Gun

For his part, Alex Freeland has been steady down at Triple-A. He is the organization’s number three prospect. The 23-year-old is currently hitting for a .253 batting average. He is a switch-hitter who has made strides in improving from the right side of the plate. He is a good contact hitter (a skill that has been missing from the current Dodgers lineup) with more than occasional power. If his offensive output matches his defensive ability, the Dodgers have a budding star. Freeland is versatile, which the Dodgers value, and his fielding range is also impressive. He saved a run in Blake Snell‘s most recent rehab outing.

Added Versatility

He would also allow Tommy Edman to play more in center field for the Dodgers. This would bring an offensive upgrade to the outfield without losing any defensive proficiency.

No one can predict the future, but the Dodgers need a spark. Maybe, just maybe, Freeland can provide it.
