According to Robert Murray, the Los Angeles Angels are calling up infielder Christian Moore. This comes less than a year after selecting him inside the top 10 of the MLB Draft. The Angels are not afraid to fast-track prospects to the Big Leagues and are deploying the strategy once again with Moore.
“The Los Angeles Angels are calling up infielder Christian Moore, who they took with the No. 8 pick in the 2024 draft, sources say,” Murray said via X. “Moore, 22, has mashed in the minors and played only 20 games at Triple-A and becomes the latest player to aggressively move through the Angels’ system.”
As Murray mentioned, Moore has only been in AAA for a short period but the numbers are incredible. Moore sports an OPS of .999 in 80 at-bats for Salt Lake, hitting four home runs, four doubles, and adding a triple. Having 25 strikeouts is not the best, however, the Angels will trade them for his power. Taking 10 walks is a big positive as well.
“His right-handed swing can get overly long and he still chases too many pitches out of the zone, but he’s making more consistent contact in 2024,” Moore’s MLB scouting report said ahead of the 2024 MLB Draft. “Though Moore’s big hacks lead to below-average run times out of the batter’s box, he can show solid speed once he gets going and looks to steal and take extra bases.
“He can make some fine plays in the middle infield but also can botch some routine ones and needs more defensive consistency. He played briefly at shortstop this year but his average arm strength means he’s probably more of a second baseman, and it’s possible that he could wind up in center field.”
Moore spent his college playing days with the Tennessee Volunteers. Nothing on his resume likely means more than winning a national championship under head coach Tony Vitello. The College World Series is a magical place at the college level and no better feeling than ending your time in Omaha with a dogpile.
Moving back to the Angels, Moore is expected to join the team for the beginning of an East Coast trip. Friday night brings a game against the Baltimore Orioles, the first of three. They will then head up to the Bronx for a four-game set against the Yankees.
Los Angeles is currently in third place of the AL West, sitting 4.0 games behind the Houston Astros. A run nice of form has popped up, though – winning seven of their last nine games.
