The New York Mets and Texas Rangers are finalizing a trade, sending Brandon Nimmo to the Rangers in exchange for Marcus Semien, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. Both Nimmo and Semien are on the other side of their careers and have been on the decline in recent seasons, but Texas was looking to shed payroll, and New York had issues in the clubhouse this season.
Nimmo, who has a full no-trade clause, will approve the trade to Texas, a source confirmed Sunday. There was some thought earlier this offseason that Nimmo would not accept a trade in his quest to be a career Met. That is no longer the case.
From the Mets’ side, swapping Nimmo for Semien shows a shift toward leadership stability and infield consistency. Nimmo had a solid offensive 2025 season, but the clubhouse needed a shakeup, with some issues this season. In Semien, the Mets acquired a player also past his peak years, but one whose work ethic and durability remain highly regarded around the league. While Semien’s production has dipped in recent seasons, New York views him as a steadier veteran who can help reset the culture, add infield defense, and provide professional at-bats—all while giving the roster a new dynamic heading into 2026.

For the Rangers, moving Semien was largely a financial decision. Texas’ goal is to shed payroll while getting younger and slightly more flexible. Semien’s declining production and sizable remaining contract made the veteran a logical candidate to move, especially as the team looks to retool in acquiring Nimmo, who, though on the back end of his career, still brings speed and on-base skill. Nimmo also provides plus outfield defense when healthy. The deal allows the Rangers more room to address the rest of the roster while cutting payroll.
