Rockies' Jake McCarthy Wins Weekly Award Amid Breakout Season

In a pair of three-game sets against the Tampa Bay Rays and St. Louis Cardinals, McCarthy collected a hit in each game and tallied 14 knocks. Impressively, he struck out just once over 28 plate appearances and added three stolen bases for good measure.

Although McCarthy enjoyed a three-hit game in the second game of the Rays series, most of his damage came during the Cardinals set. He recorded multi-hit games in all three contests, highlighted by a 4-for-5, two-homer performance on Saturday that included two stolen bases. The Rockies won that game 8-6, but that was unfortunately the only game they won over the course of the week, serving as a microcosm of their season.

The lack of team success, however, shouldn't take away from the season McCarthy is having. In 103 games, the lefty is hitting .306/.342/.518 with 25 doubles, seven triples, 13 home runs, 20 stolen bases in 24 attempts, a 119 wRC+ and 2.4 fWAR. Even outside the hitter's paradise of Coors Field, McCarthy has continued to mash with a .293/.339/.471 slash line and 18 extra-base hits on the road, proving that he's not a product of his surroundings.

McCarthy is one of six Rockies position players with 1.5 fWAR this season; the other five are Hunter Goodman (2.3) Kyle Karros (2.0), T.J. Rumfield (1.9), Cole Carrigg (1.5) and Mickey Moniak (1.5). Despite figuring as clear sellers ahead of the trade deadline, Colorado chose to hang on to each of these contributors (most notably Goodman) and even gave Moniak a two-year extension.

The Rockies are in no rush to potentially extend McCarthy, as he is under club control until the end of the 2028 season. But given that he's been arguably their best player this season, Colorado should be interested in keeping their breakout outfielder around.
