The Colorado Rockies made multiple pitching-related roster moves Thursday, highlighted by left-hander Jose Quintana being transferred to the 60-day injured list because of a left elbow sprain.
The veteran starter was initially placed on the 15-day IL earlier this week after exiting Sunday’s 9-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. He surrendered six runs in 1 2/3 innings before leaving the game alongside a trainer. An MRI later revealed that surgery will not be necessary, but the move to the 60-day IL guarantees a lengthy absence that is expected to keep him out lf action until at least late July.
Quintana signed a one-year, $6 million contract with Colorado shortly before spring training. Through nine starts this season, the 37-year-old went 2-3 with a 5.27 ERA. He completed at least six innings only once and recorded a career-low 11% strikeout rate while averaging under 90 mph on his fastball. Against the odds of a season-long slump, Quintana had started to right the ship, producing a 3.04 ERA across his previous five starts while going 2-0 before the injury.
Colorado’s rotation has been heavily impacted by injuries throughout the season. Quintana joins Chase Dollander on the injured list with elbow issues, while Pierson Ohl, Ryan Feltner and McCade Brown have also dealt with injuries. Dollander remains on the 15-day IL and has not been cleared to throw, though Feltner could reportedly return as soon as Saturday.
The roster move opened a 40-man roster spot for right-hander Jeff Criswell, who was reinstated from the 60-day IL and optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque. Criswell underwent Tommy John surgery during spring training in 2025 and missed the entire season. During his rehab assignment with Albuquerque this year, he struck out 12 batters over 6 2/3 innings.
Before his injury, Criswell impressed during a short major league run in 2024, accumulating a 2.75 ERA with 27 strikeouts across 19.2 innings in 13 appearances.
The Rockies also signed veteran reliever John Brebbia to a minor league contract. While the 35-year-old owns a 4.04 ERA across 376 MLB appearances, his recent performance has declined, climbing from a 5.86 ERA in 2024 to a 7.71 ERA in 2025.
