Rockies player benched for flipping off opposing fans

A Colorado Rockies player will be sitting on the bench for a few days after losing his cool toward opposing fans.

Rockies outfielder Cole Carrigg was caught on camera flipping off Atlanta Braves fans during Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Truist Park in Atlanta, Ga. Carrigg dived and narrowly missed a line drive during the eighth inning, which allowed the Braves to score the tying and go-ahead runs in an eventual 2-1 victory.

Carrigg made the gesture after the play, presumably in response to taunts from Atlanta fans.

On Sunday, Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said Carrigg would “sit a couple days” for the gesture.

“Cole made a mistake — he knows that is an embarrassment to the organization and that we don’t stand for that,” Schaeffer said, via Thomas Harding of MLB.com. “Listen, everybody makes mistakes. It’s just one that he has to learn from. It’s just that we will not put up with that here.”

Carrigg was not in Sunday’s starting lineup, but he did pinch hit and strike out during the seventh inning.

Carrigg is far from the first athlete to have a reaction to a crowd like this. At least the Rockies outfielder was flipping off another team’s fans instead of his own, as others have done in the past.
