Rockies quietly make another shrewd addition

The Colorado Rockies added another solid player in an underrated move on Thursday.

ESPN's Jorge Castillo reported that the Rockies have come to an agreement with utility man Willi Castro on a two-year contract. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that Castro will receive $12.8 million.

Castro had emerged as a solid utility man for the Twins between 2023 and 2025, posting a .250/.335/.398 batting line over his 1,388 plate appearances, hitting 31 homers and 64 doubles while stealing 56 bases. His production cratered after a trade to the Cubs as he posted a disappointing .170/.245/.240 batting line with four extra-base hits over 110 plate appearances.

Willi Castro another underrated move as Rockies look to rebuild

Castro is an ideal fit as the Rockies look to add viable talent to the major league roster. He can play virtually anywhere on the diamond, with at least 88 games of experience at second, third, short and all three outfield positions. That versatility makes Castro an excellent backup plan as the Rockies' younger players look to establish themselves at the major league level.

Castro is another under-the-radar signing as the Rockies look to improve their roster. They agreed to terms on a one-year deal, including a team option for 2027, with pitcher Michael Lorenzen on Jan. 7. Outfielder Jake McCarthy was acquired in a trade on Jan. 10. Reliever John Brebbia signed a minor league contract in December and could make an impact in the bullpen.

None of these moves is going to suddenly turn the Rockies into playoff contenders. They lost 119 games in 2025 and were one of the worst teams in major league history. However, these moves improve the talent level at the major league level and should make the Rockies more competitive. The rebuilding process will be a long one in Colorado, but adding players such as Castro is a good start.
