Rockies' Warren Schaeffer Reacts to Mickey Moniak Extension

Despite trade speculation surrounding him, the Colorado Rockies have doubled down on outfielder Mickey Moniak.

The 28-year-old officially signed a two-year, $16.25 million contract extension on Tuesday. The move comes in the midst of a great year for Moniak, who is slashing .278/.318/.574 with 19 home runs and 52 RBI across 76 games.

Although Moniak has missed 38 games because of a right ring finger sprain and right ankle tendonitis, he has arguably been the biggest catalyst in Colorado's offense.

Before Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, manager Warren Schaeffer had high praise for Moniak's commitment to the organization.

"Having Mickey be extended is music to my ears, absolutely love it," Schaeffer said. "He's such a big part of what we do... he believes we're on the right track and that we're going to turn this thing around. He wants to be a part of it, and that is worth so much."

The Rockies are once again at the bottom of the standings, owning a National League-worst 45-69 record entering Wednesday.

However, their offense has been one of the best in baseball this season. Colorado ranks fourth in batting average (.256), third in slugging percentage (.423), fifth in OPS (.747), and third in hits (992). The Rockies' 554 runs are the sixth-most in MLB.

Moniak has played a major role in Colorado's productive offense, but the Rockies have had several lineup pieces step up this season.

Catcher Hunter Goodman has already set a career high with 33 home runs and is on pace for the best offensive season of his career. Meanwhile, outfielder Jake McCarthy is continuing to produce from the leadoff spot. The 29-year-old is slashing .293/.332/.493 with 11 home runs and 64 RBI in 99 games this season.

Several youngsters have also provided a spark to the Rockies' lineup, including Kyle Karros (.793 OPS) and rookies TJ Rumfield (13 HR, 58 RBI, .838 OPS) and Cole Carrigg (.910 OPS in 46 games).

Even though some of those lineup pieces were involved in trade rumors, Colorado's offense remained largely intact aside from Brenton Doyle. The two-time Gold Glove center fielder was traded to the Chicago White Sox on Monday.

Nonetheless, the Rockies' trade deadline signals strong confidence in the current offense for the rest of 2026 and beyond. Moniak's extension could be just the first of many moves to solidify Colorado's lineup and continue building an exciting core.
