The Kansas City Royals, at 57–58, are on the outside looking in in the American League Wild Card race, sitting four games behind the New York Yankees.

After making a return to the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons last year, the Royals are hoping to make a late-season push again, although they’ve recently dealt with injuries to the pitching staff and rookie slugger Jac Caglianone.

The 22-year-old left-hander was selected sixth overall just last year in the 2024 MLB Draft and made his debut in early June. He has struggled to find his footing against major-league pitching, batting just .147 with a .485 OPS over 150 at-bats.

Jac Caglianone Injury Update

Caglianone suffered a left hamstring strain and was placed on the 10-day injured list on July 27. He felt the injury while running to first base after a groundout in the first game of a doubleheader against the Cleveland Guardians. He had previously felt tightness in the same hamstring while running down a double in the right-center gap.

Ahead of Friday’s series opener with the Minnesota Twins, manager Matt Quatraro announced an update on the injured rookie.

Matt Quatraro says Jac Caglianone is doing well and if everything continues to go well this weekend he will go out on a rehab assignment next week.”

Royals Hoping Time Away Helps Caglianone Reset at the Plate

This comes at a good time for the Royals, who have been piling up series wins as of late—they’ve won four of their last five—including two against real playoff contenders, the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs.

Although Caglianone has struggled, his career is still just beginning, and a month away from the big leagues could help him rediscover the success that led to his quick rise to MLB.

Randal Grichuk, acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 26, has been appearing in right field in Caglianone’s spot as he recovers.
