Ryne Nelson returns from IL, set for bullpen role in crucial series against Padres

Ryne Nelson, recently recalled from the 15-day injured list ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ three-game series against the San Diego Padres, will pitch out of the bullpen this weekend instead of taking his usual spot in the rotation, according to manager Torey Lovullo.

There had been speculation that Nelson would start Saturday’s game, a role that Jordan Montgomery had filled during Nelson’s time on the IL. However, the Diamondbacks have yet to finalize their pitching plans beyond Friday, when Merrill Kelly is scheduled to take the mound. Lovullo did note that Eduardo Rodriguez and Brandon Pfaadt are the two he is leaning towards, but has not made an official decision as it will likely depend on the result of Game 1.

Nelson has made just two career appearances out of the bullpen, both earlier this season. On those occasions, the move was a strategic decision by Lovullo, as Nelson entered after left-hander Joe Mantiply was used to face power hitters Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman. Once those key threats were retired, Nelson took over.

Arizona needs a sweep of the Padres this weekend to have a shot at claiming the top Wild Card spot. Their postseason fate likely won’t be decided until Monday afternoon, as the Atlanta Braves play a doubleheader against the New York Mets.
