The San Diego Padres face a challenging season ahead as Craig Stammen takes over as the new manager of the team. The Padres cut back on spending in the free-agent market this winter, as the ownership put the club up for sale. Moreover, they have a growing injury list, with Japanese ace Yu Darvish already ruled out for the 2026 season.
Bryan Hoeing will be unavailable to the San Diego Padres on Opening Day after opting for flexor tendon surgery on Thursday. Upon arriving for spring training after an injury-marred season, the Padres shut down the right-handed pitcher due to right elbow discomfort last month. The club announced earlier that Hoeing will make his decision regarding surgery within the week.
“It’s a bummer,” manager Craig Stammen told Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “Because he’s someone that could have really been a big part of our bullpen, filled a lot of different roles, similar to what we saw from him in 2024 and the playoffs.

“Just how much better he made our team, our bullpen, how well he fit in. We really felt like we had an ace in the hole with him in the pen.”
Hoeing joined the team at the trade deadline from the Miami Marlins in 2024. He made 18 appearances for the Padres that year, posting a 1.52 ERA over 23.2 innings. However, he logged just 8.0 innings last year, after starting the campaign on the IL due to right shoulder strain. Hoenig will miss the entire 2026 season and hopefully return for spring training next year.
As per Denis Lin and Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic, four of the five parties reportedly interested in buying the San Diego Padres franchise are still in the bidding process. They will submit their preliminary bids later this month, while a second and decisive round will take place in April.
“A second and final round of bids to purchase the San Diego Padres is expected to come in early to mid-April, with four groups of potential buyers still in the running, multiple people briefed on the process told The Athletic,” Lin and Vorkunov reported on Friday. “Those bids are projected for the second week of the month, though some negotiation could continue afterward.”

Former NFL superstar Drew Brees and the owner and CEO of California-based athleisure apparel manufacturer Vuori, Joe Kudla, are teaming up as one of the bidding parties . Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob and English Premier League club owner José E. Feliciano are allegedly looking to purchase the Padres as well.
