Despite not signing until mid-February, it appears that Alex Bregman was among those at the top of the Boston Red Sox’s wishlist this winter.
Since Tyler O’Neill left for the Baltimore Orioles in December, it was no secret that the Red Sox were in the market for a right-handed power bat. At that time, the Red Sox were linked to a multitude of rumors from Teoscar Hernández to a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals for Nolan Arenado. However, according to Scott Boras, Bregman’s agent, things in Boston were simpler than being let on.
During Sunday’s introductory press conference for Bregman, Boras divulged the secrets of the Bregman-to-Boston saga.
“Bregman was always part of it…There was never any point where he wasn’t. I don’t know what they would have done if Juan had signed here, but my clear impression was that they were pursuing him (Bregman) no matter what.”
Boras continued, saying that communication between him and CBO Craig Breslow was non-stop, indicating Boston’s aggressiveness in landing the former Houston Astro star. In addition to Breslow, Boras also disclosed the commitments that team owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner made to ensure a deal got over the line. Tom Werner, who was in England, went so far as to take part in calls that went deep into the early morning hours.
For Red Sox fans, Boras’ comments about the Red Sox’s commitment to Bregman should be very encouraging. This is a far cry from how the organization operated over the past few offseasons. And judging from Boras' remarks, ownership is finally back to operating the Red Sox as a big-market franchise.
Hopefully, for the Red Sox, the efforts of Henry and the rest of the Red Sox brass pay off, as the additions of Garrett Crochet and Alex Bregman have primed the Red Sox to make a deep postseason run.
