Sean Murphy becomes latest Braves player to hit the IL with season-ending injury

A dismal Braves 2025 campaign got even worse on Monday afternoon when the Braves announced Sean Murphy will miss the rest of the season with a right hip labral tear.

Additionally, the club recalled Dane Dunning to Atlanta and optioned Hayden Harris to AAA Gwinnett.

Murphy has been in a horrendous rut offensively. He has just four hits in his last 66 at-bats (.068 average), which has resulted in his average for the season dropping below the Mendoza Line. Perhaps this injury is the reason for his struggles, but injuries have been a constant for Murphy throughout his tenure with the Braves.

Murphy said the hip has been bothering him for the last three seasons. He’ll have surgery, and the team hopes he’ll be ready for 2026 Spring Training, according to David O’Brien from The Athletic.

If the Braves hoped to engage in trade conversations surrounding Murphy, that opportunity appears to have passed them by. They should have seriously considered doing so at the deadline. He was red-hot with the stick, and there were no other starting caliber catchers available on the trade block.

The Braves could have received a haul from a desperate team. Now, Murphy enters the offseason with more injury concerns after posting another season’s worth of games in which he failed to hit .200. It will be impossible to get proper value for him this winter.
