Sean Murphy is back, Braves DFA Chadwick Tromp

The Braves original plan was for Sean Murphy to catch nine innings today in Gwinnett before returning to the major-league club. That was nixed because of the weather around Atlanta, but Sean Murphy will still be rejoining the Braves for their pivotal series with the division-leading Philadelphia Phillies.

As you can see, Chadwick Tromp was designated for assignment to make room for Sean Murphy, which means Drake Baldwin will remain with the Braves.

It will be interesting to see how that dynamic works itself out over the rest of the season. Drake Baldwin is not off to the best start statistically, but the numbers really don’t do his play justice. He’s been very impressive through the early parts of the season. The Braves really can’t afford to play any games, so whoever is performing better will likely get the bulk of the starts, regardless of Sean Murphy’s contract.

Chadwick Tromp will be scooped up by another team. He’s been a more than serviceable third catcher for the Braves for a number of years, and now that he’s out of options, he should get a shot with another major-league club that doesn’t have a surplus at the position. In anticipation of this happening, the Braves acquired Jason Delay from the Pirates in a trade last week.
