Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Guardians Make A Trade

The Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Guardians made a trade this morning. The Mariners are 4-7 and sit four games back of first place in the American League West, while the Guardians are 3-6 and sit two and a half games back of first place in the American League Central. The Mariners are trading right-handed pitcher Cody Bolton to the Guardians in exchange for cash considerations. The Guardians then transferred left-handed pitcher John Means to the 60-day Injured List to make room on the 40-man roster. It is undisclosed how much money the Mariners will receive. The Mariners designated Bolton for assignment when they selected the contract of Jesse Hahn.

Bolton has appeared in 33 games at the Major League level over the past two seasons. In that time, he has posted a 5.40 ERA through 40.0 innings. He also has a WHIP of 1.80 with 39 strikeouts. At 26 years old, Bolton could have some upside. He’ll be stored at Triple-A Columbus by the Guardians organization. This season with the Tacoma Rainiers, Cody Bolton recorded a save in two relief appearances. At the time of the trade, he owns a 13.50 ERA through two innings. He also has 3.000 WHIP and one strikeout in those two appearances.

The Mariners will receive cash considerations from the Guardians. Likely won’t amount to much, the cash values in these types of trades never really do.
