The Seattle Mariners announced Monday that they have designated outfielder Leody Taveras for assignment. In the corresponding move, Seattle has recalled outfielder Dominic Canzone from Triple-A Tacoma and has outrighted pitcher Casey Lawrence.

Taveras has been struggling for the M's this season, as in 171 at-bats, he is hitting just a tick above the Mendoza line, .205, with three home runs, 17 RBI, an OBP of .226 and an OPS of .530.

Taveras was supposed to be the answer for Seattle's looming uncertainties of who would man right field, and the 26-year-old switch-hitter looked like the right route to take, but his production at the plate has not been a pretty sight. With this move to designate Taveras, the M's are at the forefront for the $4.75 million remaining on his contract this season.

Taking his spot in the outfield will be 27-year-old Dominic Canzone. This will mark his second stint with the team, as his first appearances resulted in going 0-3 in April in pinch-hit opportunities. He has had a good stretch as of late for Tacoma, as Canzone has slashed .296/.360/.564 across 45 games.

In his last four years playing in the Pacific Coast League, the Ohio native has 233 games played with 995 plate appearances, crushing 52 homers and a .307/.377/.550 slash line.
