Shohei Ohtani Makes Injury Announcement After 98 Games

Shohei Ohtani has continued to play through discomfort as the Los Angeles Dodgers carefully manage the health of their two-way superstar. Despite dealing with lingering issues in his left biceps and left knee, Ohtani has remained in the lineup, helping the Dodgers maintain the best record in Major League Baseball while delaying any decision that could require a longer absence.

Ohtani once again showed why the Dodgers have been willing to let him continue hitting on Tuesday despite the injuries. In a 7-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners, the reigning National League MVP went 3-for-5 with one home run and three RBIs. It was the second consecutive loss for the Dodgers despite another strong individual performance from Ohtani, who has continued to produce at an elite level even while pitching plans remain on hold.

After the game, Ohtani provided an honest update on his condition through interpreter Will Ireton.

“My bicep’s not 100 percent. Just similar issue with the knee. Do we consider pushing this? It is still July. So I think the conversation would be a little different if we’re in August or September.”

The update comes after Ohtani recently missed a scheduled bullpen session because of continued soreness in his left knee, while the biceps issue has also affected his return to a regular pitching schedule, per Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

However, there is little reason for the Dodgers to force the issue as the club still holds the best record in MLB (tied with the Milwaukee Brewers at 67-40). With October once again the ultimate goal, the Dodgers have every incentive to ensure their biggest star is as close to full strength as possible before the postseason begins.

The Dodgers will try to bounce back on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 10:10 p.m. ET.
