Cavan Biggio, at age 30, has put together a solid, if unspectacular career. The former top-five finisher for American League Rookie of the Year has spent seven years in the big leagues.
The son of lifetime Houston Astros icon Craig Biggio, a Hall of Famer, Cavan Biggio looked like a staple in the Toronto Blue Jays lineup when he hit the scene in 2019. He slashed .234/.364/.429 with 16 home runs and 42 RBI his rookie season.
But since 2023, little has gone right for the younger Biggio.
Toronto traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers in June 2024 and the Dodgers let him walk after two months. The San Francisco Giants signed him in August that year and swapped him to the Atlanta Braves less than a month later before he took an MLB at-bat for the Bay Area club. He played in four games with the Braves before they, too, let him walk.
Cavan Biggio then signed with the Kansas City Royals in January and saw spot duty as a super-utility player this season. Things still didn't turn, though.
The Royals optioned Cavan Biggio to Triple-A Omaha on Monday after he .174/.296/.246 in 83 plate appearances for Kansas City this year. In his stead, the Royals called up outfielder John Rave.
Cavan Biggio, as a veteran with more than five MLB seasons under his belt, can decline the option and elect free agency if he chooses. As of Monday, he had yet to make a decision whether to do so or take the option to Omaha.
Over his seven seasons in the majors, Cavan Biggio slashed .223/.339/.373. But he's hit better than .235 just once and hasn't slugged greater than .370 since 2020.
