Stan Kroenke added another team to his vast portfoilio of sports franchises.
Kroenke Sports & Entertainment acquired controlling interest of the Los Angeles Angels from the Moreno family on Tuesday. The transaction is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2027.
“The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market,” Kroenke said in a joint statement with the team announcing the purchase. “We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization.”
The sale will give Kroenke ownership in each of the four major men’s sports leagues and seven total teams. He also owns the Los Angeles Rams (NFL), Denver Nuggets (NBA), Colorado Avalanche (NHL), Colorado Rapids (MLS), Colorado Mammoth (NLL), and Arsenal Football Club (Premier League).
Kroenke’s teams have enjoyed considerable success under his watch. The Rams, Nuggets, and Avalanche all won a championship in 2022 or 2023, and Arsenal snapped a 22-year Premier League title drought in May. The Rapids also won their first MLS Cup in 2010.
He’ll inherit an Angels organization that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2014 or won a postseason game since 2009. Currently at 53-85, they’re in danger of posting their worst winning percentage in franchise history.
The Angels didn’t record a winning record in six seasons with two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, who left for the Los Angeles Dodgers after his second MVP campaign in 2023. They have also squandered a brilliant career from future Hall of Fame outfielder Mike Trout, who has an .807 OPS in his 16th season.
Kroenke can at least oversee a fresh start for the Angels right as Anthony Rendon’s regrettable $245 million contract comes off their payroll. Albert Pujols’ $240 million deal previously hamstrung the franchise for a decade.
Moreno bought the Angels for $183.5 million in 2003, a year after they won their last World Series title. He sold them for at least $3.9 billion to Kroenke, per ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez.
“The Angels Organization is pleased to announce this transaction with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment,” Moreno said. “The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years and we believe with KSE’s experience and success they are the best next owner for the franchise. The Angels Organization looks forward to continuing its commitment to the fans, our employees, the players and our business partners.”
