Stephen Vogt drops defiant comment on Guardians playoff outlook

The Cleveland Guardians may be struggling, but manager Stephen Vogt is not preparing for an early offseason.

“We don’t have any plans to go home in October,” Vogt said during his pregame radio appearance with broadcaster Tom Hamilton.

That confidence comes at an important time for Cleveland.

The Guardians have won only three of their past 10 games, preventing them from gaining meaningful ground in a crowded American League playoff race. Despite that slump, they remain only 1.5 games behind the final Wild Card spot.

Cleveland strengthened its roster with several promising moves at the MLB trade deadline, but those additions have not yet translated into the consistent results the team needs. The Guardians must rediscover the formula that helped them reach the postseason in recent years.

There is still plenty of competition standing in their way. The Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins are all battling for Wild Card position. With that many teams separated by a narrow margin, every losing streak — or winning streak — could drastically alter the standings.

Vogt’s message is exactly what the Guardians need to hear. Cleveland cannot afford to dwell on its recent struggles or wait for the teams ahead of it to collapse. It must begin creating its own momentum.

The Guardians still have enough time and talent to make a postseason push. However, remaining within striking distance will not matter unless they start winning consistently. Vogt does not expect Cleveland’s season to end before October. His team now has to prove that confidence is justified.
