Takeaways from David Stearns' Press Conference

In the midst of their disappointing season, the Mets have some bright spots to look forward to for seasons ahead. From rookies Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing blossoming into everyday players, to Juan Soto stringing together another MVP-caliber season, and Nolan McLean and Christian Scott showing encouraging strides in the rotation.

Stearns and company certainly have optimism about how they can help the Mets right the ship and climb back into postseason contention.

2. Will the Mets Trade One of their Catchers?

This may seem far-fetched considering Francisco Álvarez is only 24-years-old, and Luis Torrens just signed a two-year extension, but Stearns was asked about the future of the two catchers amid the trade rumors surrounding them.

"Catching is really important. We're very fortunate to have two really good ones," Stearns said.

The Mets have one of the best catching tandems in all of baseball. Despite his injury history, Álvarez has proven, when healthy, that he can be a power threat offensively. And while Torrens doesn't have the same power as Álvarez, his arm and defense behind the plate have been stellar ever since arriving to the Mets in 2024.

The Mets would be wise to keep both Álvarez and Torrens.

3. Will the Mets Trade Lindor?

Who would've thought that Francisco Lindor's name would be brought up in trade rumors this year. Although Lindor still has five years and close to $170 million left on his contract, Stearns didn't necessarily rule anything out when asked about the possibility of trading him.

"I'm not going to rule out or in any specific player on anything. I don't think that's wise for me to do," Stearns said. "What I will say is, we've got a group of young players and we've got some potential Hall of Famers, future Hall of Famers, that we view as our core. We expect them to be our core."

It has been a rough year for Lindor to say the least. The veteran shortstop has had mental lapses and miscues on both the base paths and on defense. He had an elbow debridement procedure and then broke his hamate bone in the offseason before missing two months with a calf injury during the regular season. And when healthy, Lindor hasn't looked like himself.

While it would be surprising to see the Mets trade Lindor given what he has meant to the franchise, it sounds like anything is on the table for Stearns in the short and long term future.
