Texas Rangers Part Ways With 5-Year MLB Veteran

The Texas Rangers designated infielder Jonah Bride for assignment this week, just two days after selecting his contract from Triple-A Round Rock.

The move came as the club promoted outfielder Jarred Kelenic to the major league roster, reflecting a short-term adjustment based on upcoming pitching matchups rather than any long-term evaluation of Bride’s performance.

Bride, a 30-year-old right-handed hitter, had been called up on August 9 primarily to face a stretch of left-handed starting pitchers. He appeared in two games, going 1-for-5 with a walk and two strikeouts.

With the schedule shifting toward right-handed starters, the Rangers opted for Kelenic’s left-handed bat and outfield versatility on the bench. Manager Skip Schumaker had spoken positively about Kelenic’s readiness after a strong showing at Round Rock, where the former top prospect posted impressive numbers earlier in the season.

Bride’s brief stay in the majors marked another chapter in a journeyman career that has included time with the Miami Marlins and Minnesota Twins. He signed a minor league deal with Texas ahead of the 2026 season, was released in mid-July, then quickly re-signed and continued producing at Round Rock.

There he hit .282 with a strong on-base percentage, drawing walks at a high rate and showing modest power with 10 home runs. His ability to play first base, third base, and second base made him a useful organizational piece, yet major league opportunities have remained limited.

Career numbers of .220/.311/.312 across more than 200 games illustrate the gap between his minor league success and big-league production.

Because Bride was out of options, the designation for assignment required him to pass through waivers. No team claimed him, and on August 13 the Rangers outrighted him back to Round Rock.

The decision keeps a proven Triple-A contributor in the organization while freeing a 40-man roster spot. For Bride, the rapid up-and-down cycle is familiar. He has cleared waivers before and continued playing, often delivering solid minor league value that occasionally earns another look at the highest level.

For the Rangers, the sequence underscores the constant roster management required during a competitive season. With the trade deadline already passed, the club is relying on internal depth and opportunistic promotions to address specific needs.

Kelenic’s return offers another left-handed option in the outfield, while Bride remains available should injuries or matchup demands create another opening later in the year.

In the meantime, the 30-year-old will resume his work at Round Rock, where consistent production has repeatedly put him on the cusp of the majors.
