Isiah Kiner-Falefa won the American League pennant with the Toronto Blue Jays last year prior to signing for the Boston Red Sox for the 2026 season. However, the Hawaii-born infielder received a lot of criticism following his costly baserunning mistake in Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers last November.

Speaking to the media for the first time since the Fall Classic, Isiah Kiner-Falefa spoke about the incident as the Boston Red Sox officially announced his signing on Tuesday. The 30-year-old said he suffered a lot of abuse from all quarters for his gaffe, although he never got an opportunity to explain his perspective in the media after the game.

“My biggest regret was that there were no cameras in my face after the game. That was the toughest thing for me,” he said. “If it was going to be such a big deal, it would have been nice to have the camera in my face and have a chance to speak.”

“But it blew up without me getting a proper interview, so I thought that was unfair. Everybody is just going off of it without me really being able to talk about the play.”

Isiah Kiner-Falefa failed to score the potential walk-off World Series-winning run for the Blue Jays in the bottom of the ninth inning with the scores tied at four runs apiece. He did not time his jump correctly from third base, as the Dodgers threw him out at home plate on a grounder to second base from the bat of Ernie Clement.

During his interview, Isiah Kiner-Falefa explained that he was merely following the instructions from the Toronto Blue Jays during his baserunning error in Game 7 of the World Series. Kiner-Falefa said that the first intention was to disrupt an inning-ending double play. In hindsight, he would make a different choice, but he’s ready to own his error and move on.

“If I could do it over, I definitely would have gotten a couple of steps out,” he said. “But you have to do what the organization wants, and that’s kind of been the thing there. With runners in that situation, they would always keep the runner close.”

“My initial read was to just go and slide and try to break it up,” he added. “It almost paid off. Ernie almost got the job done on the next one (with a deep flyout). But at the end of the day, it’s just a great learning experience. And I’m ready to flip the page.”

The Boston Red Sox signed Isiah Kiner-Falefa to a one-year, $6 million deal earlier this month. He previously spent two seasons with their archrivals, the New York Yankees.
