Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez has put himself squarely in contention for his first MVP and he added another point in his favor by hitting his 40th home run of the season in a 6-2 win over the Kansas City Royals.
But despite the veteran flirting with a Triple Crown, the Astros find themselves in a dogfight with the Texas Rangers for the American League West title and a spot in the postseason. The win put them back in first place by one game with nine to play in the regular season as they welcome in the Atlanta Braves for a three-game series.
2026 is the first 40-homer season of Alvarez’s career, while his .311 batting average leads the A.L. Heading into Friday’s slate of games, he trails Junior Caminero by one home run and Pete Alonso three RBI, so there’s still a chance he can join the elite club of batting Triple Crown winners. If he does, there’s a good chance it also means the Astros were able to hold off the Rangers and return to the playoffs after missing out in 2025.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Alvarez is now the 26th active Big League player to hit 40 home runs in a single season. How many of those players can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
